Redefining Beautiful

I heard about these girls on the news this morning (not this exact video, but very similar)

"Too often in our celebrity-driven culture, beauty is defined by the products a woman puts on her face. But a group of teenage girls in Texas has set out to change that idea, one makeup-free face at a time. "

I LOVE this! Way to go girls!

  1. Interesting... but I actually have to say I disagree with their theory that makeup makes you lose your sense of self, causes you to not focus on school, and is just used to try and be that "perfect" person. Makeup can help some women feel on the outside how they feel inside. It can boost the self esteem of many which would actually help them concentrate better in school. It could lead to the confidence to try and make new friends and get outside their shell. Whether people like it or not, there has been and always will be an initial judgement made on someone based on the way they look. It is human nature. That is not to say everyone is so shallow that they won't give someone not wearing makeup the time of day but being "attractive" does help in many situations and feeling "attractive" is important as well. So... sorry to burst the bubble here girls... but makeup is not the problem. It is low self esteem caused by a warped media to lead you to believe you are worthless unless you are an unachievable Photoshop perfect. Makeup would only be a very small part in trying and cover up a self esteem that low. There are many more important underlying issues that would be better to support than just this even though I see what they are trying to get at....

  2. I feel like you might be missing the bigger picture. I agree with you that makeup can be used to enhance beauty as well as boost self esteem. In the interview I actually saw on the news they comment on the fact that they are not saying makeup is a bad thing. I also don't believe they are claiming that the cure to low self esteem is to ban makeup - rather I believe the point they are trying to make is that the media (which even you agree is a part of the issue) does force this idea of "Photoshop perfect" in many different ways, makeup just happens to be one of them; they also mention the "perfect car," the "perfect friends," and that desire to be "popular" according to media ideals. I believe that they are referring to the extremes that are taken among people. It's not just wearing makeup to help you feel pretty or attractive, but the idea that without makeup (or these other things) you are NOT pretty or attractive. Going makeup free (which they do only once a week so obviously they aren't saying makeup is bad) is the way that they have chosen to make their statement regarding this apparent, but deeply rooted issue.

  3. Lyndsey, I couldn't agree with you or these girls more! If you need makeup so that you can feel the same on the outside as the inside, maybe you already don't feel so good on the inside? Seems like a contradiction to me. I think their brave act shows just how confident they are on the inside. Way to go girls!
